What makes a memory precious? Is it the anticipation of a long-awaited event, such as a wedding, or a birth? Or is it the everyday-ness of ordinary things—the way your dog greets you with unrestrained enthusiasm every time you come home, the way your cat always nestles between the space by your neck and head and sometimes smothers you? Do we know when a precious memory is being made? Or is it only once a loved one is gone that we reflect on previously annoying habits—dogs spreading the trash around the house, kitties meowing insistently for a refill of the food bowl—and wish we could have it back?

We know life is tenuous. We know, in the back of our minds, that in the blink of an eye, we could lose a loved one. We also know that as our loved ones age, we are coming closer and closer to the end of that relationship in its tangible form.

How do we make the most of our time on Earth with the ones we love? We must celebrate the everyday things. The way your dog insists on carrying her own leash in her mouth. The way your cat leans his head into your hand as you scratch his cheek. The way your ferret sleeps on her back with her legs sticking up. The way your bearded dragon chomps down on a piece of apple like it’s the best thing in the world. Notice these things. Recognize them for what they are. They are the scenes unfolding before our eyes every day, our own precious memories.

This video covers two weeks instead of one, so it’s a little longer. Just some of what you’ll see: a 17-year old box turtle, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, a rex rabbit (one of our regular boarders), a mixed-breed dog getting ready for patellar surgery, a white persian cat, an adorable chihuahua, an adorable pug who has hip dysplasia, a Leonberger, a duck with a slipped tendon, Cottonball the white rat, an immature Bald Eagle brought to us by Operation Wildlife for whole-body x-rays, an assortment of cute kittens and puppies, a cocker spaniel who looks as regal as a lion, a Coton de Tulear puppy, a senior Viszla, Dr. Peuser examines a sheltie puppy with a fractured tibia, Dr. Romain scopes the upper airway of a cat, and a French Bulldog with pneumonia is feeling MUCH better!

Our long-time veterinary assistant, Anthony, had his last week with us before departing for vet school at Western University in California. This week we treated a couple different puppies for pneumonia; examined some unusual patients (including a Pacman frog and a Burmese python); performed stem cell therapy on Apollo, a St. Bernard with hip dysplasia; ; checked out an American Bulldog who got beat up by a beagle; performed surgeries and dental procedures; played with lots of cute puppies, kittens (a lot of orange ones this week!) and other animals. We also went out to lunch together on Anthony’s last day!

This was a shorter week due to the holiday (closed Monday) but we still stayed busy. We hope you enjoy this video montage showing just a little bit of what we did this week!

This week: Lots of cute puppies (sheltie, Cavalier King Charles spaniel, black lab mix, a pug), a baby bearded dragon, a bandanged Bichon, a rabbit, a baby kitten tries out as our new office assistant, our receptionist’s new puppy (Dazi), a cockapoo post-anesthesia for a dental procedure, an African Gray parrot, a beagle who loves to play with plastic water bottles, a pair of pekinese, various kitties, a sugar glider, and a baby bulldog who loves to give kisses.

We love the folks at Greenies for making such fantastic dental chew treats for our dogs and cats. They are one of the few companies that sells a product approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), which means they have demonstrated through clinical trials that Greenies help reduce calculus (tartar) formation on teeth. As a company made up of pet lovers, their enthusiasm for what they do shows in everything they do! Their Greenies will put a smile on your dog’s face, and their tweets will put a smile on yours!

At Olathe Animal Hospital, we see a wide variety of patients–dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, hamsters, snakes, turtles, tortoises, even frogs–but one group of patients we see deserves extra-special mention: BIRDS! Both Dr. Mark Romain and Dr. JC Burcham are members of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) and love staying current on the latest avian medicine and surgery. If you stop into our hospital on any given day, you may just see one of our beautifully-feathered friends. Because of our interest in providing veterinary care for birds, we receive referrals from other veterinarians all around the Kansas City metro area. For more information about our hospital, visit our website (see link on the right).
